Dairy farms, milk production and livestock

Dairy livestock such as milk cows, goat, sheep (ewes), buffalos, horses, camels or other require a close follow-up of their health, production performance and feed intake, breeding and genetics, both on herd (tank) level and individual (animal) level. Through analysis of individual milk samples, several production and animal health parameters and status indicators can be accurately measured or calculated.  The goal of this individual follow-up, as an indispensable complement to herd (tank) analysis, is to improve and sustain milk production, milk quality, animal health and finally dairy farm profitability in an ecological approach, implying animal well-being, welfare and longevity.

Ekomilk works in that sense as a complement to DHI - related organisations (dairy herd improvement). Instead of trying to frequently obtain and transport individual milk samples for analysis in an external lab (like milk control centers and dairy herd improvement associations, DHIA), with Ekomilk the measurement instrument can remain on-farm and the milk analysis results can be shared automatically over the Cloud without the need for cumbersome milk sample transport, milk sample storage and conservation.

For on-farm testing, Ekomilk has both compact, portable models and "mini-lab" models with integrated printer and integrated tools for preparing the milk sample. Extra care needs to be taken with sample preparation if the sample is to be tested shortly after manual milking or manual sampling. Additionally, an extra module for automatic heating of reagents and milk can be added to certain Ekomilk models. Usually an end-user calibration menu is available for fine-tuning of the calibration provided in the factory. The main milk ingredients (components, chemical composition) and characteristics (properties) which can be tested with Ekomilk (considering all versions, configurations and models) are:

Milk storage, collection, hauling and transport

Milk tanks and milk buckets exist in many different sizes, forms and shapes. Ekomilk can be personalised with custom form factors and an IP65 rating for the housing. Sometimes improved calibrations exist for older milk which has a certain age from milking. Fat separation also needs to be avoided or reduced; this is often possible thanks to a specific sample preparation unit (de-aerator).

For the power supply of Ekomilk measurement devices, besides the standard choice between 240VAC and 120VAC, usually also a DC12V cable and cable connector is included for most models and configurations, allowing operation in milk collection trucks and cars. Thanks to the Ekomilk Cloud Connector and the optional built-in memory for automatically storing milk analysis results, Ekomilk allows immediate testing of milk composition, milk properties and milk quality during milk collection from silo to tanker truck. Ekomilk milk analysis results can be analysed and transferred automatically thanks to optional built-in algorithms and Animal Monitoring Platform software for milk supplier and milk tank comparisons.

 

Milk processing, milk transformation

Most milk processing activities result in the one or more of the following common dairy products:

  • milk: often after homogenization and/or pasteurization: Clotted cream, Kumis/Airag, Condensed milk, Evaporated milk, Ricotta
  • cheese: Curds, Whey, Cottage cheese, Quark, Cream cheese, Fromage frais
  • ice cream,
  • yogurt: Leben, Ayran
  • butter

For cheesemaking factories (cheeseries, creameries) , yogurt factories and other milk processing activities, Ekomilk has adapted pH probes and an extra sample preparation unit. Such sample preparation unit is needed if milk analysis occurs within a few hours after pasteurisation (often together with homogenisation) with pumps, which in turn introduces air bubbles in the milk.

 
 

Dairy veterinarian (DVM) cabinets, dairy livestock and udder hygiene specialists, animal nutritionists

If you are active as a dairy veterinarian (DVM) - a dairy vet, as a mastitis and udder hygiene specialist or as an animal nutritionist specialised in the metabolic balance: you need reliable data, at least about milk composition, milk properties and milk quality, on herd (tank) level and on individual (animal) level, for proper herd management. There are 3 options, 3 different ways of working, depending your preferences for upfront investment versus cost-efficient operation, real-time operation with distant monitoring and your way of working with colleagues and farm personnel:
 
  • As a first, less investment intensive option: with the custom software modules from the Animal Monitoring Platform, you can use one lightweight portable Ekomilk measurement instrument to use regularly at various farms for real-time measurements. Afterwards merge and analyse data from different sources (including Ekomilk) and share the analysis results with other veterinarians, labs (milk control centers, DHI etc) and farmers, securely online in your branded private user group.
  • A second, more investment intensive option is to automate to whole process via the tele-vet and remote diagnosis module; in this case an Ekomilk instrument is installed at each farm. The Ekomilk Cloud Connector allows you to follow on distance what is happening on each farm, in the stall, parlour, shed, barn. The milking personnel can easily take samples for the Ekomilk milk analysis.
  • A third option is to install your own, central mini lab (milk control center) with an Ekomilk instrument. In this case, all milk samples will arrive at your central mini-lab. The Ekomilk "mini-lab" models with integrated printer and integrated tools for preparing the milk sample could suit your needs. Care must be taken for the milk sample transport conditions (especially temperature and duration), presence of milk sample conservatives (usually not suitable for Ekomilk analysis) and proper, unambiguous identification of milk samples, whether individual (animal) or on group level (tank milk).
